Institution Research - Comparison

Out of the two institutions I have researched of Hammer Studios and Warner Bro. Pictures, I believe that Hammer Studios would be the better option out of the two options to produce the film which me and my group have planned to create. This is because they produced the film where we got out inspiration from and they are known for their Gothic Horror and Horror genres and they are also been very successful over the years of producing films.

Institution Research - Warner Bro. Pictures

What is there ideology/mission statement?
The Warner Bros. Pictures are dedicated to producing and releasing a large variety of different genres of films. This is so that their company appeal to all different ages so they can generate more of a profit from their customers.

Does this fit with your ideas?
The Warner Bros. Pictures would not fit with our idea as they are most well known for their hit films of Harry Potter. I believe that our film would be better if it was produced by Hammer Studios as they are mainly known for their horrors which they create. Although they produced 'Friday the 13th' they are mostly known for creating different genres of films.

Is your film mainstream or indie?
The Warner Bros. Pictures are a mainstream producing organisation as they have produced many world famous films, they are mainly known for their series of Harry Potters.

On the producers website does it already have a target audience? What information can you gather from that?
Warner Bros. Pictures, appeal to all types of audiences as they have different types of films which they produce. Each different film which they produce will appeal to a different audience which will be set by the creation of the game.

Institution Research - Hammer Studios

Which production company specializes in your genre?
Hammer Films is a British Production Company based in London, the company was founded in 1934. This company is best known for their Gothic Horror films made from the middle of the 1950's and until the end of the 1970's. The production company have also produced films in different genres, for example, Science fiction, Thrillers, Film Nior, Comedies and Television series. Hammer Films production companies success was due, in part to the distribution partnership with the major US studio company - Warner Bros.

What is there ideology/mission statement?
Hammer Studios was a major force for British cinemas during the early 1950's due to the reaction of the after effects on the war and the rise of the conservative political system. The aim for Hammer Studios was to make British Gothic Horror the biggest selling genre of films in the industry.

Does this fit with your ideas?
This institution fits in with our idea because we have planned to create a Gothic Horror which was motivated from The Woman In Black, which Hammer produced, this shows that Hammer studios usually produce Horror and Gothic films.

Is your film mainstream or indie?
Hammer studios is seen as a mainstream institution to many members of the public, but they are also not well known because of the film genre that they produce as not a lot of people enjoy watching Gothic Horrors as they prefer the more popular genre such as comedies and action genres. Hammer studios state that they have a large budget for their films so this means that films are well organised and presented which makes the institution noticeable from the other institutions.

On the producers website does it already have a target audience? What information can you gather from that?
Hammer films usually appeal to teenagers and older age groups, the films they usually create are a rating of 12, so that they can appeal to the younger and older generation.

What Certificate will your film be?

When a film is created it needs to have a certificate to show the age range for the film so that younger children do not watch scary films that may cause them to be upset. All films have a age certificate so that the user knows if it is acceptable for the people or children around her to watch it.

U - Suitable for all

These films are for people above the age of four and higher, there is not a lot of bad language in these films, at most they will have 'damn' or 'hell'. In these films there are also slight sexual behaviour this can be referenced to kissing and cuddling but nothing more is allowed. Violence is also generally mild and there isn't a lot of it shown through a U rated film, there are usually brief scenes or moments where a character is in danger, but they will be resolved quickly by the characters, but any behaviour that the young children can follow is not allowed and is disapproved off in the film industry.
These types of films usually contain a positive message about loyalty, honesty and friendship throughout the characters and there is always a happy ending between them. There is normally no reference to illegal drugs in these types of movies due to the young age of people that watch them.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/u

PG - Parental Guidance

PG stands for 'Parental Guidance' this means that the film is suitable for normal viewing but there are a few scenes within the film that may be unsuitable for young children. The cerfitcate states that a PG film should not unsettle a child aged around 8 or older, and that some parents should consider the films content to check if the content may upset their children. PG films are not just for young children, they target all ages, but the PG cerfitcate shows that nothing within the film should upset someone around or above the of 8 years. It is important that a PG does not contain any inappropriate themes or scenes for a child. In a PG there may be mild language used but it needs to be used in the correct way otherwise it may increase the certification rating of the film. Whereas, sex references throughout a PG is less likely to occur, and if they do they are under ailed and infrequent. Violence will usually be mild and there should be no detail of violence in a PG. In a PG film there could be some behaviour which young children might then copy, this can be bulling, playing with electricity, but this will not be accepted. There might be small references to illegal drugs or drug misuse but there is not allowed to be a strong reference to drugs in a PG.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/pg

12/12A- video/cinema release suitable for 12 years and over

Films classified as 12A and videos classified as 12 contain scenes which are not suitable for younger children which are under th age of 12, no one under the age of 12 should attend a 12A in the cinema unless with an adult. The difference between a 12A and a 12 is that with a 12A the child will need an adult to attend the cinema with them if they are underage, then in shops and stores the staff members are not allowed to sell or rent the item rated at a 12 to the customer that is under the game of 12. There is not a age limit for the 12A but it recommended to not bring young children to these films as it may upset them. There will be strong uses of language in these films (for example, 'f***', 'bitch' and 'twat' may be used) but this depends on the situation it is being used in. Any discriminatory language will not be allowed in a 12 rated film. Also, sex may be discreetly portrayed in a 12A or 12 rated movie but it should not go beyond what is suitable or a teenage to witness, moderate violence is also accepted within these films but there should be no large amount of focus on the blood or injuries. Horror films can also be passed as a 12A or 12, only when the overall tone is not disturbing to the young audience.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/12a-and-12
15 - Suitable for 15 years and over
No one under the age of 15 is allowed to see a film which is rated 15 or buy/rent a 15 rated video as they are not suitable for people under the age of 15. In a cerfitcated 15 film, no themes are prohibited as long as it is suitable for 15 year olds. In a 15 rated film you might see the following in a film; strong violence, frequent strong language, portrayals of sexual activity, strong verbal references to sex, sexual nudity, brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence, discriminatory language or behaviour and drug taking. In a 15, there is allowed to be a lot of swearing, there may often be uses of the strongest language (for example, 'c***') but if this is used too much it may not pass for a 15. Racist, homophobic and other discrimination themes and references are allowed in a 15 but if there is a lot of this them it may not pass for a 15 and have an age certificate of 18. In a 15 rated film, there can be strong horror, but it mustn't be a strong focus on it. When drugs are used in a 15 rated film, they must not promote or encourage the audience for drug misuse.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/15

18 - Suitable only for adults
Films that are rated 18, are for adults only, no one under the age of 18 is allowed to see an 18 rated film at the cinema and they are not allowed to buy/rent one from stores either. With an 18 there is no limits for these films as they are for adults only and they are free to choose their own entertainment. In an 18 rated film they often contain a lot of the following; very strong violence, frequent strong language, strong portrayals of sexual activity, scenes and themes of sexual violence, strong horror, strong blood and gore, real sex and discriminatory language and behaviour.  In an 18 rated film, there is no limit to how much strong language can be used as they are made for adult viewers, as well as discriminate language can also be used throughout the film. There can also be strong and detailed scenes of sex, this can also include full nudity. In an 18 rated movie there is no limit on the violence and the directors can also focus on the violence and the injuries caused through this. Drug taken can also be shown but it cannot promote drug misuse. In some 18 rated films, there are scenes which may need to be removed this can be from where the scenes breach the criminal law or that they created it to create a criminal offence.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/18

My group have planned for our film to be the same age certificate as The Woman In Black, which was produced by Hammer Studios as our film was inspired by the hit film. The age rating for The Woman In Black is rated at a 12 so this is what my group decided to rate our film as. Our film could also be rated as a 15 because of the blood which is shown when the neck is slit right at the begging of our film idea as people may find this disturbing and upsetting to witness. I would rate our film as a 12 as there isn't a large focus on the blood in the brides neck and there isn't any swearing throughout it which makes it more suitable to be a certificate age rating of 12.

Codes and Conventions - Gothic Horror

What is Gothic Horror?

Gothic Horror is a dark genre of films which is to create tension for the audience, this can result in them getting scared from the film. Gothic Horror comes from Gothic fiction novels from the 1800s. The two most popular gothic novels are Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (1818) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Gothic Horror is much more important than just ghost stories and horror. They usually tales of mystery and horror which was to make the audience experience a chill down the spine.

Conventions

Gothic fiction uses wild and desolate landscapes, dark look and style, low key lighting, graveyards, ruined buildings, medieval buildings and they often use spooky effects with ghosts and spectres. The weather is used a lot when making a Gothic Horror it can vary from Mist to having Storms or Sunlight.

Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-scene is used a lot in Gothic Horror because the little details of Mise-en-scene can create a Gothic Horror really well if it is done correctly. Within any film Mise-en-scene is taken into account as films need each element of Mise-en-scene.

Setting
Gothic Horror films, often are set in graveyards or near buildings which have been destroyed, this creates mystery in the film and it makes the film entertaining for the audience and makes them want to watch more of the film. Sometimes the setting along with music can scare the audience or make the frightened to watch the rest of the film or to find out the ending.

Costume
Usually, Gothic Horror clothing is black or red and it is normally ripped on the bottom of the costume, they also tend to have a lot of blood on them which shows the horror in the costume and the audience can start to speculate about the character they are by their costume before they have even spoke.

Performance
The performance in a Gothic Horror genre is extremely important because if it isn't done correctly the whole thing wont look good and it will look more like a comedy. In this genre its good for the characters to not show a lot of emotion through their performance as it will create a uncomfortable feeling for the audience.

Make up
Make up in a Gothic horror is important as it creates the Gothic theme from the film. Makeup on a character in a Gothic Horror Genre is usually supernatural. It shows faced in a different way which is scary to some viewers. they often have a lot of blood on the characters face so the audience are attracted to the blood on the face as it often tells a story about it.

Props
Props are used in Gothic Horrors, but the props are usually knifes, or things similar to them, baseball bats and other types of items that can be used as a weapon. Little kids toys are also used, for example teddy bears are often used when there is a child involved in the film, this makes the audience start to think something bad is going to happen to the child or that they are going to do something bad themselves.

Colour
In Gothic Horror films there isn't a lot of colour shown through the film, but when there is colouring on the frame it stands out so it draws in the attention of the audience and they focus on the colouring as the films are usually in black and white to create effect. The characters are usually always extremely pale skin tone then their clothing is dark colours to create a binary opposite of their appearance.

 Hair
The hair of a character in a Gothic Horror based film can represent a dark feel towards the character. The usual hair in a Gothic Horror is normally messy and it looks like they have had it back combed and it is wild, I believe that  this shows that they are scary and you do not know what they are capable of and to stay away from them as they are unpredictable and could be dangerous.

Camera Shots

Camera shots are important in any film but they do play a big part in this genre as the camera shots are used to make the audience feel like they are there and that it is happening to them. When filming a Gothic Horror film its good to do some close ups and extreme close ups so that the audience get a good idea of what is happening in the film.

Close Ups and Extreme Close Ups within a Gothic Horror Genre of fil are important to use as it makes the audience feel like they are within the film and they create an attachment to characters.

Using a Point of View shot is also effective within a Gothic Horror, for example if the POV shot is from a killers eyes you can see everything which the killer is going to see while taking part within a kill or afterwards.

Sound

The sound in a Gothic Horror creates a lot of tension and mystery as it is normally fast music going to the rhythm of a heart beat. As it goes on it usually gets faster and louder which may scare the audience more to hide before something happens.

Within Gothic Horrors, stings are used a lot. This could be when there is a large part of action about to take place or a significant moment within the film.

Editing

The editing of a Gothic Horror film has to be quick, static shots are used alot as it just jumps onto another character this creates tension which increases the thrill for the audience.

There are slow editing within a Gothic Horror which creates tension, this is affective to the audience as if there is a large action scene and it is slowed down it creates larger affect.

Pre-lim Evaluation

Once our film was completed, we did some editing on it to make the film shorter and to make the shot changes look better and professional. By doing this we also cut out any unwanted sections and scenes which was recorded but wasn't needed. Throughout the stage of editing out work we found it difficult as we filmed more than we needed and we needed to cut it down so that it as within the correct time frame available.

In the Preliminary Task we had to include, match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. Also in this task we had to have good control over the camera, a variety of shot types and close attention to Mise-en-Scene. Another element that was looked for was sound, if the sound fit the action and there was also if the narrative makes sense. Throughout the editing process we ensured that we had met the criteria.

After we had finished editing, we looked at another groups film and evaluated their work which they had created, during this time our work was being evaluated by Daniel Grayer, Ben Lecky and Brandon Chan.

Feedback from the other group:

In the other group they said that in the first twenty seconds of our film was really good and so was the movement of Tommy with the camera following him. They stated that is was "Very Good". Another member of their group also said that the first twenty seconds was the best part of our film. They said it was good due to the "Mise-en-Scene and the smooth editing". This did show that the opening to our film was better than the rest of our film. They both said that we had match on action and an example of shot reverse shot. Also they said that we controlled the camera, used a variety of shot types and that the sound fitted the action and the narrative makes sense.

The group then said that we broke the 180 degree rule which meant if it was our Final Film we would have to recreate the scene to achieve a good grade. During the filming we didn't use the tripod when we started as we couldn't get it to stand correctly so we didn't use it, due to this we had a shaky camera shot. Also when Brandon and Tommy are in the Freddos office there are Spanish and French words in around the room with the flags as well as we couldn't get another room to do our filming in. Next time we would make sure our setting was better than this time.

In conclusion, I believe that we made a good film overall for out first attempt, but next time I would make sure to look at the improvements which we was given to make sure that our next film is better than this one so that we all achieve a high grade. From learning from this for our final idea we will ensure that the full criteria is met and speak to our teacher for her to confirm that it is correct, we will also use the tri-pod at all times so that there isn't an unsteady camera angle while filming unless it is needed.

Pre-Lim Video

My groups pre-lim task was based on the price of what Freddo's are now as the price has continuously increased over the past few years.

Here is my groups Pre-Lim film:

Sunday 16 November 2014

Pre-lim Task

My group of four (me, Brandon Playford, Tommy Brading and Brooke Spencer) decided to make a short video, we chose to do a video of a business meeting about 'Freddos' being too expensive and that the price needs to  go down. In our group we talked about the costume, hair, setting and performance in the pre-lim, this was so we knew exactly what was going to happen in the video and so we knew what to record. We also took into consideration what camera shots we would do during the filming.

Storyboard

We also made a story board of each shot that was going to happen, this showed us which camera shots we was going to use and the plan of what will be seen during the shots. When we filmed our video we used the story board so that we knew what each section would be about and the camera shots.

As a group we decided that Brandon Playford and Tommy Brading would be the only two actors during our video, Brandon was the owner of Freddos and Tommy was going in to see him to request the price to be put down for the chocolate bar. Brandon and Tommy was told to dress smart to make them both look like professional business men, they both wore a white shirt, black trousers and a tie.

We wanted to film this in our college as we believed it would be a good building to use as it is new and as it looks professional and would suit the building facilities which an high market company would have. I also asked my tutor if we could use her office during our video so that Brandon could sit in there and Tommy enters the room angry and that is where they have their talk about the price change, because Brandon was in a office it showed that he had a lot of power.

We also created a script for our pre-lim task:

(After entering the building and making his way to the office, Tommy opens the door and storms into the office)

Tommy- "This is a fucking joke!"

(Throws Freddos)

Brandon- "Please take a seat sir and tell me what your problem is"

(Tommy picks up the Freddos and then sits down)

Brandon- "Right now you're sat down what seems to be the problem sir?"

Tommy- "My problem sir is that these (holds up Freddos) were 50p; Freddos back in the day were 10p! This is ripped off; you're ripping everyone off, what is your deal!"

Brandon- "I understand you're annoyed sit but I am the head of marketing and distribution, I don't deal with the costs of these items I just simply deal with the clients who buy these items and therefore contact them and so on"

Tommy- "Well fine then, but you better tell the person who is in charge of the costs that I am looking for them and I am really pissed off!"

(Tommy stands up and storms out the room)

(The end)

Brief and Initial Ideas

In my group of four there is me, Brandon Playford, Brooke Spencer and Tommy Brading. We have grouped up to work on our Preliminary Task and our Main Task together. For our Preliminary Task we have planned to create a business meeting between two people and for the Main Task we have decided to create an opening to a horror film which will be based on The Woman In Black with our own spin on it.

Initial Ideas

Preliminary Task
Our initial idea for the Preliminary Task, is to have a business meeting between Brandon Playford and Tommy Brading, they will be discussing what has happened to Freddo's - "Why are they now 65p!". They have an organised meeting in the Freddo building/factory and Tommy is in charge of the Freddo industry and Brandon is coming in to try reduce the cost of the chocolate bar as it is now too expensive for a Freddo.

Business Meeting - Brandon Playford and Tommy Brading.

Clothing - Suit, Ties, Smart clothing
Setting - Office type scene

Main Task
Our initial idea for the Main Task, we got inspiration from the horror film - The Woman In Black. But we have changed it completely by making the opening part of it as a Wedding Day but the bride gets killed and she then haunts her killer.

Editing

Shot Reverse Shot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0xiCIMIwLY                                        Shot Reverse Shot is where the camera will be on one character as they are speaking, when the other character begins to speak the camera cuts straight away to the other character. This is usually used when characters are having a conversation.
Straight Cut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c214l2AFfDs  Straight cut is where the scene changes from one to another without any effects and its usually not noticed. This is usually used in less important scenes.

Fade In/Out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bup_zehvBo                                           Fade In/Out is where the scene appears and changes slowly and it goes from not visible to visible.

Dissolve
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt5mcZFYLng                                    Dissolve is where the scene changes by slowly fading away bit by bit until eventually there is a different image.

Montage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUiqXk-KTzE                                                      Montage is a group of short clips or scenes put together to make a bigger one to be played together.

Transition
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3yy3f6kVbI  Transition is similar to straight cut, during the scene change you can add more effects.

Dolly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK_p4kzcPVY                                      Dolly is where a camera is stuck onto a cart which travels on tracks for smooth movement.

Dolly Zoom
Dolly Zoom is where the camera moves close or further from the character while adjusting the zoom angle to keep the character the same size within the shot.

Follow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqKal8uetjo  Follow is where the camera follows the character around.
Pan

Camera Shots

Extreme Close Up
This is an Extreme Close up, this is where you can only see a close up of someone’s face, this is to show characters emotions, and no background images. This is effective because the audience cannot see anything else apart from the face so the emotion is clearly shown, but due to there being no background it is unknown why the characters facial expression is happy.

Close Up
This is a Close Up, it is alike to an Extreme Close up but you can see more of the face and you can also start to see a little bit of the background behind the character. This is effective because the audience can see the characters full face and some of the background which shows where the character is and it could be the reason behind the facial expression of the character.

Medium Close Up
This is a Medium Close Up, this is where you can only see from the shoulders upwards. This is effective because the audience will wonder what is in the characters hands. This is usually used when focusing on a character.

Mid Shot
This is a Mid Shot, this is where you can see from the waist and above of a character. This is effective because the audience can see half of the characters body and they can also see the background of where the character is, which could represent the character or it could be why the character is acting in a certain way.
Medium Long Shot
This is a Medium Long Shot, this is where you can see from the knees upwards, this is effective because you can see a lot of the character and a lot of the background image which shows the audience the facial expression, body image and it shows if they have a open power house or not. This is usually used when focusing on a character or a scene.

Long Shot
This is a Long Shot, this is where you can see the full body of a character and you can also see a lot of the background. In Long Shots the photos show more of the background than the characters. This is effective because you can see the whole of the background of where the characters are but you cant see much of the characters so that the audience look at the background more than the characters.
Extreme Long Shot
This is a Extreme Long Shot, this is where you can see all of the characters body its similar to a Long Shot but in an Extreme Long Shot is at a really far distance, so you see more of the background image and it makes the character look really small. This is effective because you see more background image than the character, the characters facial expression is harder to see but it leaves it to the audiences imagination of the characters facial expression.

Two Shot
This is a Two Shot, this is where you see two characters in the same shot. This is effective because the audience can see the two characters together in the same shot, this could be the first time they see both characters in the same shot so it makes it more effective. A Two Shot is usually used in a main or important scene.

High Angle Shot
This is a High Angle Shot, this is where the shot is at a higher angle which makes the character look smaller than they actually are. This is effective because the characters are made to look weaker, for example in the photograph above there is two girls running down stairs and there is a werewolf coming down the stairs after them but due to him being higher up the wolf looks like he has more power and a more open powerhouse.

Over the Shoulder
This is a Over the Shoulder shot, this is where the shot is taken over someones shoulder but the side if the characters face and shoulder are in the shot to show that they are looking at them. This is effective because the audience knows that there is someone else there. This is usually used during conversation shots.
Low Angle Shot and Point of View
This is an Low Angle Shot and Point of View Shot, an Low Angle Shot is where the shot has been taken at a lower angle which makes the characters look bigger and it makes them have a bigger power house. A Point of View Shot is when the shot is taken in front of someones face to show the characters point of view, for example in the photograph it shows that the characters Point of View was his hands.

Tilted Shot
This is a Tilted Shot, this is where the shot has been taken at an angle, and its been tilted or turned slightly. This is effective because the audience sometimes have to move their heads slightly due to the shot being taken at an angle.
